In addition to the formal worship of the various Abessai deities, many pay homage to supernatural personifications of humanoid nature and figures of legend called the Loa. These Loa preside over numerous mortal matters beneath the gods themselves (though there is some argument and volumes of discussion among theologians as to the nature this relationship and how the Loa came to be) and often act as indirect agents or emissaries sympathetic to the causes within the divinities' portfolios.
